A great example of what our union – and one person within it – can achieve

It was a pleasure to be in King’s Lynn today at the opening of a new UNISON resource centre. Housed in a former social club on the site of Norfolk’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, it’s a testament to the dedication and hard work of the hospital’s branch secretary, Darren Barber.

Well Done Darren

Big Drive At QEH

Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital is seeking to recruit 100 extra nurses and three midwives with help from its newly-decorated pool car

The hospital currently employs 820 nurses and 102 midwives, but says that with more than 100 vacancies, its staff are under pressure to keep things running.

The new campaign will see the car take to the streets to encourage medical staff to come and work at the hosptial’s wards.

Hospital chief executive Dorothy Hosein said:” Nurses are a vital part of our journey towards becoming an outstanding trust in all areas of the care we provide to our patients.

“The hospital has already run a number of recruitment campaigns which have proved to be successful and we are hoping for a similar response to this one.”

As part of the campaign, the hospital has joined forces with Unison, union to public and private service workers, to run a competition to win an iPad.

The specially-decorated car will be photographed at four prominent locations around West Norfolk, and these will be posted to the QEH’s facebook page over the next four weeks, starting on Friday, July 15.

To be in with a chance of winning the competition, participants must correctly guess the locations and like the facebook page.

The winner will be picked out of a hat on Monday, August 15.

Unison branch secretary Darren Barber said: “There are numerous pressures facing nurse recruitment nationally at the moment.

“As Unison we try and help in as many ways as possible. This includes training and the highlighting of recruitment as an issue at a national level.

“Unison is proud of this hospital and its staff and we are proud to support initiatives which will bring more people to work here.”

The recruitment campaign is one of a number of initiatives for local, national and international campaigns, which are being run by the NHS Trust.

It comes after a busy period for the hospital, which officials say has not left its “winter mode” in terms of the number of admissions.

The number of A&E admissions is up by more than 3,000 on last year.
