QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL (KING’S LYNN) BRANCH – NEWS RELEASE – 03/07/13

QEH UNISON MEMBERS TO CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF UNISON, AND 65 YEARS OF THE NHS, AT THE UNISON BIRTHDAY BIG WEEKEND IN CAMBRIDGE

5/6/7 July, Parkers Piece, Cambridge

For further information regarding this press release, please call Darren Barber, Queen Elizabeth Hospital UNISON branch secretary, on 07717 631847.

UNISON, the public service union, was twenty years old this week, as Cohse, NALGO, and Nupe merged to form UNISON on the 1st July 1993. Whereas the National Health Service came into being on 5th July 1948. This weekend, QEH UNISON members will be joining with other UNISON members from across the Eastern Region, to celebrate these milestones at the UNISON Birthday Big Weekend event at Parkers Piece in Cambridge. Members, and their families and friends, will be celebrating with music, cakes, tea, and fireworks!

‘For 20 years UNISON members have benefited from the essential cover that comes from being a member of the largest public service union’, said QEH branch secretary Darren Barber. ‘In those 20 years, UNISON has faced many challenges, and achieved some notable successes. For instance, we were at the forefront of gaining a national minimum wage.

Our National Health Service also has a birthday this week. And our message is clear – 65 years is not a retirement age for the NHS. It is clearly a difficult time, with the NHS coming under attack from both cuts, and privatisation. But we will be campaigning to ensure our NHS is still around in 65 years time, and we will be celebrating these two milestones at the UNISON Birthday Big Weekend.’

The weekend kicks off on Friday night with an evening of live music on the main stage, with Hot Chocolate headlining. UNISON will be hosting a reception for invited guests on that evening (sponsored by Thompsons solicitors) & is delighted that Rodney Bickerstaffe – one of the founders of UNISON and former UNISON General Secretary – will be a key speaker for this reception. Reception guests will arrive from 19.15, with speeches and presentations from 19.45. A spectacular fireworks display at 22.00 will round the evening off. The Saturday kicks off at midday, and visitors can come to the UNISON Village, and learn more about the work and history of UNISON. On the main stage, top 80s ska band The Beat will be one of many acts. Sunday is International Day, and again kicking off at midday, visitors to the UNISON village can enjoy the Cuban sounds of the band ‘Cubana’.

UNISON is the largest public service union in Britain, with over 1.4 million members.
